NHS Forcing Pregnant Women To Eat Unhealthy Foods
The NHS is forcing pregnant women to eat food that is bad for their health and harming their unborn children, a leading medical council has warned.
The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists said the advice being given to pregnant women and their partners is incorrect and risks reducing the chances of them giving birth to a healthy child.
According to the guidance, for two weeks a pregnant woman will be served only fresh fruit and vegetables - including the Mediterranean staples of tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, peppers, cucumbers and celery - as well as servings of low-fat yogurt, meat, fish, pulses, eggs and cheese.
The college's chairman, Professor Tom McMichael, said: "Pregnant women are being fed the wrong advice at the wrong time, as well as being fed diets that are not good for them or their unborn baby.
"There are many positive things pregnant women can do to ensure they are not put at risk of having a baby with a medical condition.
"One of the most important steps they can take is to eat a healthy, balanced diet at every stage of their pregnancy, with lots of fruit and vegetables and also meat, fish, pulses, eggs and cheese.
"The council wants to get the message across that this advice is not safe, and that pregnant women should not be deprived of the food they enjoy because of it."
The college said that it has long advocated for pregnant women to eat a healthy balanced diet and avoid "too much calorie-rich foods".
The college said the following advice has been issued to doctors:
"Groups of two or more pieces of fruit or vegetables will be eaten with meals. Fresh fruit and vegetables are recommended in all meals. Fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy foods are recommended for snacks.
"Examples of fruits and vegetables to eat are: apples, pears, grapes, oranges, grapes, melon, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, greens, salad and salad vegetables.
"Fruit and vegetables are good for babies as well as pregnant women. Eating fruit and vegetables provides essential nutrients for pregnant women and also for their baby.
"It is important that all children are given fruit and vegetables as part of their daily diet. Fruits and vegetables contribute to a healthy body be359ba680
